This is a quite unique view down a shaft in the
Ruhr area. You can see the shaft's wall quite well. The black bars have to keep
the pit cages in their vertical position on their way up or down the shaft. On the
left side there are different pipes leading down the shaft supplying underground
working places with different materials. On the right side of the picture you
can see the emergency ladders. They are mounted in order to enable the miners to
leave the colliery even if the hoisting machine does not work. But remember:
Climbing up ladders from a depth of more than 1000 metres to the surface must be very
exhausting.
