A suspension railway in action !

The mono-rail !

In this picture another method of underground transportation can be seen: It is special, because it does not need rails on the floor. If you translate the German term for it, it is called "one rail hanging train". The system is comparable to the one of the famous suspension railway in Wuppertal (Germany): It is hanging at a rail. This has the advantage that - also because of the mono-rail's high payload - even heavy load can be transported in roadways that cannot be reached by train.

For example, because of this it is possible to bring the very heavy shield supports to the longwall mining areas, even if the gateroads are too rough to use usual trains.
